Gate of Ivrel, by CJ Cherryh, is a fantastic blend of science fiction and fantasy. Great characters, a fun world, and just so well written. I loved this book, one of my favorites of the year for sure.

I’ve just finished up the second of John Scalzi’s Lock-In novels and I’m looking for some recommendations for some new books in the same vein. I’ve enjoyed a bunch of sci-fi mysteries like The Murderbot series, the I Robot novels, even Niven’s ARM stories. So throw me some more like that if you can.

I was browsing Reddit (anonymously) the other day when I stumbled upon a curious post. A suicidal person writing their final words and thanking the people who messaged them. I remember them writing something along the lines of:

I really enjoy sci-fi that starts grounded in reality — that eases you in with a slow build, a sense of normalcy, before the shift. I love when the story begins in the everyday, then opens into something strange and vast. Think the beginning of The Matrix or Old Man’s War, perhaps? That kind of vibe. Any recommendations?
The only language I know with any fluency is English. I want to read The Trial by Franz Kafka. The Trial was written in German and if I read an English translation I feel I am not really reading Kafka. Am i the only one who feels this way? Does it even matter?
My sister asked for a small go bag that would fit a single book with room for the typical things (cards, phone, mints). I'm looking for some good space opera. I read a lot on royal road and KU. I love space opera, but I'm sick of military and AI tropes. Any good suggestions? The more ship to ship battles the better. I understand that may be counter-intuitive, but I've read several privateer/freighter/scrapper books that were amazing. Looking for more of the same.
About 15 years ago I read though everything Neal Stephenson had written. It started with snow crash, then the cryptonomicon, then less popular works like zodiac and the diamond age. In general I loved them all. I stopped reading his books right before anathem came out...
My partner and I are doing some traveling and dispersed camping in some fairly remote locations. We listen to audiobooks quit a bit and on one of our legs we listened to The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher and it was so perfectly creepy and we want more of it. The combination of the wooded setting, and psychological type horror that was more creepy than graphic really made the week after listening to it kinda terrifying. We've read Pet Sematary previously and it also really hit the right notes and would have been a great read deep in the trees.
The beginning of this little think piece of mine will cover the ending of the book, as I believe the ending is the glue that binds the rest of the novel together. I’ll then add some general thoughts about plot, pacing, and prose.
I am trying to get into reading and I started with Brave New World, I have been reading the book for a year and have about 60 pages remaining. Before anyone mentions I am aware it is a small book that can be finished in a week, I am not used to reading. I normally read short stories, comics, and manga. I finshed the machine stops quickly, but I couldn't get into Brave New World, it has a lot of boring parts.
I've taken a break from nonfiction for a while (finished lotr and read a whole bunch of Stephen king). Now I want to go back to reading nonfiction, but I want something that will pull me in another world of facts I didn't know about. Be it political, sociology.... anything really. I don't know if "facts" is the word I'm looking for here (English is my second language). Can I say "discoveries"? Things you've found through the book that shocked you? Hope that makes sense.

Like the two Naomis [Wolf and Klein], conservatives and progressives become warped mirrors of one another. The progressive campaign for bodily autonomy is co-opted to be the foundation of the anti-vax movement. This is the mirror world, where concerns about real children – in border detention, or living in poverty in America – are reflected back as warped fever-swamp hallucinations about kids in imaginary pizza restaurant basements and Hollywood blood sacrifice rituals. The mirror world replaces RBG with Amy Coney-Barrett and calls it a victory for women. The mirror world defends workers by stoking xenophobic fears about immigrants.
In middle school I read The Three Musketeers and enjoyed it overall. Later in high school a movie adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo was released and I enjoyed it enough to read the book. I feel like I lucked out in picking up the Robin Buss translation. It was a recent translation based on the most complete original texts he could find. He explained how the first anonymous English translations would sometimes edit the story to fit English sensibilities of the era or simply not be very good at translation. The book is full of endnotes explaining things, like references that would’ve been obvious to contemporary readers but are largely lost to anglophones over a century later, or things that simply don’t translate well, like an important scene where a character uses the formal vous tense instead of the informal/familiar tu tense but this distinction doesn’t exist in modern English. It made me want to re-read The Three Musketeers in a translation by Buss, but the only other Dumas work he translated before his death at the age of 67 in 2006 was The Black Tulip.
A life time ago I lost a friend to Objectivist philosophy. Not wanting to lose said friend, I read The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged to try and figure out why he was acting like an asshole all of a sudden.
