Hi all, for those unaware, we do a census each year to get a feel for our users. No questions were mandatory, so different questions will have different numbers of responses, but overall we got 78 responses, with 52 of those remaining once we remove those that don’t use LemmyNZ (they don’t have a LemmyNZ account AND do not participate on LemmyNZ communities). I posted this census in another community so we have a bunch of people from the wider threadiverse. You can see that post here.
Hearing some of the research coming out of the Hugging Face incident, I can’t stress how alarming I find this. Apparently we’ve created software that we’re not too sure how to control and we’re also happy to let it ramble over the internet. It also does not appear beholden to attempts at safeguards on its activities and is willing to deceive its human creators.
New Zealand’s exporters are diverting shipments originally bound for China into other markets as demand from the country’s biggest trading partner cools, an official from the antipodean country’s central bank said Thursday.
The 2026 kākāpō breeding season, the biggest on record, has come to an end with a bumper number of kākāpō chicks produced. The youngest chick has just passed 150 days old, a milestone that marks its independence.
TL;DR if you haven’t already, please fill in the Lemmy.nz Census (even if your account is on another instance). Open to all. Skip any questions you aren’t comfortable answering!
Golden chain tree in bloom. This tree is not native to New Zealand, but the similar native Kōwhai (Sophora microphyllia) is famous for its bright yellow, bell-shaped flowers that bloom in early spring.
Shot this morning in Sheffield. Neighbour’s tree.
Australian rugby league’s showpiece event will head across the Tasman for the first time, with the men’s State of Origin confirmed for Auckland next year.
New Zealand’s security agency said it disrupted an attempt by a Chinese state-linked observatory to install satellite-tracking infrastructure in the country, highlighting the case in its annual assessment of an increasingly dangerous espionage environment.
Its a joy to listen to him on the drive to work. I genuinely reckon he’s such a good bugger and I feel grateful he is one of our most prominent journalists. We could do so much worse

I always find this topic fun. I’ve flown into Queenstown, Dunedin, Nelson, Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland, Gisborne, Hamilton, and Whangarei. I can totally understand the difficulty of Queenstown as it’s a busy airport surrounded by mountains.
This is an interesting legal development overseas that has potential repercussions for NZ, particularly in light of the proposed social media ban for teenagers.
I’m pleased to see things finally get to this stage. I remember commuting by train as a student while the idea for this project was being kicked around by politicians. I don’t live in Auckland any more, and don’t think I ever will again, but I hope this project makes the Auckland CBD a thriving place to be.
AA research suggests the majority of drivers wouldn’t score more than 70 percent in a basic road rules test.
The shocking figures have prompted the association to call for optional knowledge refreshers when licences are renewed.
Kiri and Lou began airing in 2019, and is voiced by Liv Tennet as the feisty, emotional, little yellow dinosaur named Kiri, and dreamy, placid and purple Lou, gently played by Jemaine Clement. They’re friends in a Jurassic-era forest setting that sounds and feels like an ancient Aotearoa. The show airs on Sky NZ and TVNZ+ and each episode is a sweet 10 minutes long.
To add to the discussion of housing costs: building houses is so expensive, slow, and difficult that people are pushed into buying and keeping old and cold houses with maintenance issues. Not only that, they pay top dollar, and can’t afford to replace them with nice new houses.
The drag collective has accused Tamaki and other church members of making defamatory statements, including that their library events were “grooming” and “targeting our innocent kids with their filth”.
I love it when our media tries to pretend good news is actually bad news. Houses are more affordable than they’ve been in decades, first home buyers are actually able to buy, investors are fucking off.
So I’ve been watching the news regarding some of the Bike lane drama in the US, but as an active bike user I have also noticed something weird happening around the city (Hamilton)
