I’ve had a sewing machine for literal decades but only ever made simple totes, maybe a few repairs. I never really learned or gathered the patience to use a pattern for a more complex project, and when I didn’t know how to do something I’d give up.
I'm looking for good quality video game, fantasy, and scifi themed fabrics. Found plenty listed on Etsy, but what could be some other webshops to check out or keep an eye on? Both generic themed and licenced official fabrics. Preferably tricot or cotton, and in EU if possible, but other options are welcome as well!
Made from bikejersey, cut is self designed, adapted from a pleated pants pattern I got from Etsy. Quite comfortable due to the super stretchy fabric. Let's see how it holds up on the trail 😎
Hi all! I'm getting decent at sewing and regularly wear clothes that I've sewn, but I still consider myself a novice when it comes to understanding fabrics. I'm primarily an online shopper which makes things a bit tough of course. I also like to steer toward natural fibers when possible.
Currently reorganizing the stash, as it recently grew out of the designated boxes. One thing I started is taking photos of every fabric laid out on the floor and tagging them with notes on the size and material, then put them in directories on the pc acc. To in which box they are. Has anyone found a smarter solution?
Hi. I am a beginning sewist. I’ve sewed a hand full of small objects. Now I’m sewing my second garment using a commercial pattern. The pattern is rated easy. I am slowly getting through it. But I wish the directions were clearer. Does anyone have recommendations for patterns that are clear and specific for a beginner? Thanks.
I got a cargo pole meant for construction business to mount my Beamer on for projecting on the table when sewing. It was a suggestion from user @abcdqfr on my post from a bit over a week ago with the MacGyver setup.
Friends of mine recently started a family and on my question whether I can make anything for their little one they asked for a balloon wrapper. It takes up minimal space when stowed (aka w/o inflated balloon) and is nice and touchy once you put a lung full of air into it.
Just wanted to share a project I made. This garment is the Gilbert Waistcoat by PatternCos on Etsy. I recommend it, especially for shiny fabrics like this one!
Pattern is self-drafted.
The straps attach in the front via buttons. It has 2 lengths.
The back is fully smocked & the front is partially so.
Waist is fully elastic.
The bodice is fully lined.
Waist bow is detachable via pin and can be put on a headband.
I made all the little bows.
Made the super poofy petticoat that fluffs up the skirt volume, too. Not that it matters. Took about 5-6 layers of tulle.
Excuse the pun in the title. I've got it to work, but looking around doesn't give much info. I'm assuming it might not be an original Singer part. Does anyone know anything about it?
I have a high quality hoodie and fitted hat I like but they have an American patch on them. I'd like to remove them without damaging either if possible.
I find myself in this situation: I bought a used Sailrite Ultrafeed sewing machine, which came with a bunch of accessories, including a table with a Consew servo motor. The Ultrafeed is in a travel case, and I want it take it on boats. I also have a Kenmore machine from 1970, with a badly-damaged case. It would make more sense to transplant that head onto the table. The machine has the same dimensions as the Ultrafeed, so I just need a new drive belt.
The colours show much better on the before picture though. Basically I underestimated the thickness of the fabric and went for a drawstring at the waist. The peplum-thingy was also a questionable decision. The only thing I regret is the lack of pockets in the new version, I could stuff things inside when the waist was held together. I might add a pocket at some point and maybe a collar. \
Sage green cotton linen overskirt that ties over the separate white overskirt with a ruffled hem. Both are sitting on a petticoat I made that sports 5 layers of tulle!
I've gone and bought myself one of those vintage Singer automatic zigzag attachments. A swiss made one, specifically. I did so with the knowledge that they would be more or less nothing but a gimmick.
So I have a serger / overlock machine that has a manual specifying that it uses a needle type called "HA-sp1" needles. Alternatively, they are also called "HAxsp1" and "15xsp1". They're all the same thing.
I just made an almost no-effort cloak, but when I tried to wear it outside I was disappointed to find that the wind cut right through the single layer of no-pill fleece I had cut into a U-shape and draped over my body. Who could have predicted that! 🤦♂️
I love my Brother CP60X, but the thread does not play nice on the holder. It tends to get stuck in the plastic lip and then break. So I made a simple felt barrier like that many sewing machines come with. Works like a charm! Now the thread spool doesn’t spin erratically and instead has just enough friction to maintain tension…and not tangle on the plastic lip. 10/10 recommend.
Maybe this isn’t the right community to post in, so apologies if this seems odd. But I figure we sewists may have specific needs or thoughts when it comes to garment care so this is the first place I thought of to ask.
I had a master plan of diminishing The PileTM of things to finish or repair, and it's going farly well. Some of it was really quick and easy, some of it was surprisingly fun to do, some of it was a bit boring.
I have a plan of making a ... kind of cardigan/vest/jacket thingy by next week end, and I had to pack all of my sewing away until tomorrow. I am not positive that it will work but it would be cool to wear the new thing on the week end getaway.
I have taken pictures of the fancy black trousers, but I forgot the back and I still need to find the energy to write a coherent text.\ Do not despair, it will happen ! Someday.
I am currently in a bit of a low sewing mood after finishing "The Pants Journeytm". I still need to take good pictures of it, then I'll tell you about the adventure that it was.

I wanted to share this awesome Singer 611g I bought over the weekend. The person I bought it from told me it was her great aunts. It came with everything and more! It's in fantastic shape and still works great despite possibly not being used since the 80s. I put in some sewing machine oil following the manual (it had the manual, and warrenty card still). Manual shows a grease/paste(?) as well so need to figure out what to get for those areas that use that instead of oil.
I found this vintage printed panel for making a Cinderella doll, and it was so much fun to assemble and embellish. I added lace, ribbons, gemstones, gold thread, silver fabric paint, sequins on the crown, various beads, gold ric-rac around the pillow, and white piping on the cape. The cape is detachable (using small snaps). I also added a magnet to the shoe which sticks to a metal button on the pillow; that way it can be taken on and off. I'm impressed with how the arms can be moved. They are attached with a thread that goes through the body which allows the arms to pivot. I'm so excited to give this as a Christmas gift for my daughter!
My mother gave me some skirts she doesn't wear anymore, and a couple of them are pretty cute. The problem is they are too big for me. So how do I make them not too big?
