I was surprised by The Primogen associations, Louis Rossmann is a guy I kinda suspected of being not good. Welp, two more people to cut out of my YouTube watching.

Yeah, I didn’t watch him constantly (only caught some videos here and there). Its good info to file away, I basically have a lot of Linux youtubers that glaze Omarchy, the Arch but more fascist and AI slopped on muted forever. As anyone who supports what DHH is doing or making is on my suspicious person list.
the nice thing about omarchy is that the fascist and fascist-adjacent arseholes naturally gravitate towards it.
I will grant Omarchy that, it’s the perfect flytrap and litmus test for Linux users, a great way to figure out fascist or fascist-adjacent shit burglar by their response to learning what a POS that DHH is. There are several distros like that…

Perhaps so, but this one is the giant 10km tall giant space elevator base station that stands out far above all. I pitched a story on it when he raised $8M in sponsorship for this dross. By the time I wrote it, a couple of days later, it was $10M. By the time it was published it was $12M.
That was a week ago and it’s $18.5M now.

Yep, Omarchy is the most profitable and prolific of them all. The others are more ideological magnets that reveal chuds like metal detectors…I am learning that Artix is kinda like this. But thankfully I don’t have to use it, I could just install Void Linux if I wanted to learn how to customize my own install without systemd at some point.
Even YouTubers are actively talking about it without doing proper research about it and glazing it. Those YouTubers are often getting immediately getting put on never recommended to me again, I will not have Omarchy, DHH shill factories on my feeds.

I think it’s safe to say that any kind of chronically online “celebrity"/well-known person in open source space with “strong” opinions on everything is more than a little weird. It just goes with the territory.

The weirdness is much less visible in Primeagen’s content nowadays (albeit I’ve almost completely stopped watching it so maybe it’s now getting more overt?), I’m not overly surprised devault has nothing concrete to point at - in fact I wouldn’t be surprised if he has scrubbed the more egregious things from his youtube channel.
It’s never been big attention-grabbing things but more a certain level of crypto-fashy offhanded remarks and general vibes - been brought up in the weekly snarks a few months back.
The biggest recent criticism I could make is having DHH on fire over an hour with allegedly no pushback on how terrible his “distro” is given how much primagen supposedly prides himself on his technical prowess. Then again, he’s not using omarchy himself so what does he care if the rubes in his audience get duped into trashing their machines?
I watched half of the DHH interview in awe of the non stop glazing. Blocked his channel after that embarrassing display.

there’s a few names i’d probably add; one is peter simon, known as probono, the appimage maintainer, a professional wayland hater (he’s maintaining a ginormous gist that lists the failures of wayland, most of which is not true, not true anymore or at least grossly exaggerated).
He’s an odd dude, but I haven’t seen anything that makes me think he’s fash-tinted TBH. Most of his tech opinions are sound, IMHO.
I don’t like Wayland myself – not as much as he hates it, but it brings nothing I want or need, breaks a lot of stuff that I really like, and is so utterly pathetically technologically unambitious it actually angers me. Also, just like GNOME, like Flatpak, like everything to come out of RH, everything about it betrays its developers deep, broad, profound ignorance of all the prior art except the bits they had to work on.
I am heartily sick of this constant BS dialog of “X is bad, W is the brave new future”. It’s bollocks, and I am glad someone is standing up and saying no.

I’d heard some rumours but this spelled it out and it’s not nice. I was formerly engaged to a Norwegian, and learned quite a lot about Scandinavian culture and beliefs. Some of it is nasty and the Mullvad dude, DHH, and “Awesome Kling” as well, are saying the quiet part out loud.

The “censorship resistance” being criticised here is in support of free speech absolutism: posting propaganda, misinformation and brigading and trolling people with no recourse. This is bad and has real and meaningful consequences for people like Jason Arday who was recently driven-to-suicide for being black and successful amid false plagiarism allegations and a media witch hunt.
I agree that left leaning causes also need resilient comms infra to allow for organisation. Unfortunately these issues are two sides of the same coin. I think it is completely fair to criticise people like Dorsey who left bluesky in 2024 because of their moderation approach which is hardly heavy handed - especially if you are a far right hater of trans people . We can condemn this behaviour and also hold the belief that we need resilient infra that the government can’t easily seize.

Oh for sure and I am definitely strong Manning Drew’s post to the max here. If it turns out he just generally means that resilient infra is bad with no nuance then I agree with your original point.
I’ve never used any suckless software, but it kind of sucks seeing them on here. I liked the Idea of their software philosophy, even if it wasn’t for me.

Calling someone a fascist is hardly defamation in US law, especially since basically everyone on the list are working towards a society where it’s absolutely fine to call them fascists, because they’re fascists and want to make fascism great again.

I only knew Lunduke from his Linux sucks series and was surprised to see him on this list. so I did a quick search and found lunduke keeps his own ‘software politics tracker’ which of course does not track all politics, but just “woke”, “leftist” and “dei”.

Oh hell yes. He emailed me angrily when I wrote a piece saying the new GNOME Exec Dir was a shaman. He was angry I didn’t make more fun of it. I said it’s no weirder than the dead-Jew-on-a-stick religion, and he flamed me and started calling me names in the blog.
He’s always been a loudmouth but I think he’s worked out that being an alt.right loudmouth wins him fans/viewers/subscribers and thus $… so he has gone all in.

ThotDragonNot on the list but Gamers Nexus posted a video about an event they did with Louis Rossman a few days after his transphobic comment and to my knowledge have not said anything publicly disavowing that or him. So, yeah disappointing but hardly a surprise at this point.

Dommage pour Rossmann qui fait un travail de fou, l’une des rare voix de la raison aux US. Mais ça titube pas mal sur les trans. Curieux de voir dans quel sens ça va évoluer mais si il continue de trainer avec les gars de FUTO et sur kiwi farms on va assister en direct au gentil qui devient méchant.

Je me demande si le mettre sur ce genre de liste ça ne va pas l’isoler avec son financeur et ses potes fachos. Il y a une pipeline entre la transphobie et l’extrême droite, mais mettre toutes ces personnes immédiatement dans la même case j’ai un peu du mal.
Il y a aussi Daniel J. Bernstein, que je ne connaissais pas mais dont je ne comprends pas trop ce qu’il fait dans une liste principalement composée de fachos : il serait lié des affaires de harcèlement sur des doctorants dans un laboratoire de recherche mais c’est malheureusement hyper fréquent et ce n’est pas vraiment un indicateur de sympathie pour le fascisme ou de transphobie, si ?

C’est la responsabilité de chacun de faire en sorte qu’ils ne se sentent pas à l’aise : haut les coeurs !
C’est un effet secondaire du fait que la plupart des projets libres sont par nature extrêmement inclusifs parce qu’on ne te demande pas grand-chose de plus qu’une adresse e-mail pour participer.
C’est quand les gens commencent à être suffisamment impliqués pour qu’il y ait des rencontres en vrai et des discussions sur autre chose que de la technique que tu te rends compte si la personne avec qui tu parles est un libertarien néofasciste ou une furry trans.
Petit conseil: si vous avez une communauté que vous ne connaissez qu’en ligne et que vous voulez vous réunir à un moment, je vous suggère fortement de faire une petite liste de «choses évidentes».
Du genre que “les agressions sexuelles, c’est pas bien”, et qu’il y a deux personnes à qui vous pouvez en parler si ça arrive <coordonnées des personnes, idéalement dont une femme>. Qu’on ne fait pas de remarques racistes, homophobes ou sexistes à cet événement.
Oui, des trucs de base. Eh bien, je vous garantis que si vous avez un ou deux relous qui viennent demander des précisions ou qui trouvent que ces règles sont trop woke, vous serez content d’avoir esquivé une balle.
Bonne liste, je me la garde sous le coude, mais il manque quelques noms. Certes, ceux-ci ont moins de notoriété.
