Ah go on, get into warhammer. You know you always wanted to :)

Might I suggest turnip28 as a cheaper, easier, and funnier alternative?

with totally not 3D printed proxies and absolutely legally obtained rules pdfs ofc

3D printing fits the bill, just get a hobby level printer that requires tinkering. I’m still rocking dual Ender 3s from 5 years ago.

And even if you get a printer that doesn’t require as much tinkering, like Bambu ones, then you can just get way to into 3D modeling instead!

The printer we can check out of the school district is definitely not hobby level. I’m a little too intimidated to check it out

Oh cool! Didn’t see there was a dedicated community!

I’ll crosspost it!

I was going to thank you for introducing me to this new community.

Turns out I’m already joined.

…….why are these not in my feed except once every few days then???

Maybe because there is only a new post every few days?

See the change you want to be in the world or something get fuckt and live fast and all

A little magic the gathering never hurt anyone (warhammer was already mentioned)

Universes beyond got me pulling the rip cord and bouncing from that hobby.

Yeah, I played MTG back during the original ravnica block.

This universes beyond thing doesn’t do anything for me.

That’s around the time I started. Now I just make decks based on older sets so my friends have a chance with their power crept cards.

unless you don’t want the looming threat of armed pinkertons at your door telling you you can’t use your pieces of cardstock

Never in history have we had this much free knowledge into new interests and skills so easily accessible for us. There are a huge number of options that are really cheap.

When people go to Netflix, they open the app, and scroll for 45 minutes trying to find the perfect movie or show.

Then they pass out on their couch in their underwear as their cat licks their ear to wake them up. Even the cat is like “c’mon dude. It’s bedtime”

And then you wake up the next day, and suddenly you got 40 missed notifications because your dad had a seizure last night, and is in the hospital. You would have heard the phone ring, but you were asleep. If you had been engaged, and watching the 1993 movie Super Mario Bros, you’d have heard your phone. But you got overwhelmed by choice, and fell asleep instead.

Now your dad thinks he’s Rodger Ebert, so he has started dressing in balerina tutu’s. You try to explain to him that Rodger Ebert never wore tutus. And he says “YES I DO!” as he starts doing dance moves from the 1950s.

All this because you couldn’t decide what to watch in your hubris of options!

I’m so glad software is a good portion of my hobbies. Most of the time, it’s free, and when it’s paid, it’s usually a best-in-class product and rather enjoyable to use compared to the free alternatives.

They said growing weed is cheap…. It is fun though.
Beyond equipment, good genetics can cost a pretty penny or two.

Genetics may be expensive but rooting hormone powder is cheap! Also don’t buy fancy grow lights. Shop lights are way cheaper and work just fine!

It’s a bit nuanced with lights. You don’t want to overspend, however knowing some info for what to look at helps. Efficiency numbers are often exaggerated, however they give some idea of how the light is likely to perform however there’s not just one metric to look for. Things like PAR (including ePAR) intensity, alongside checking the differences in the spectrum and so on.
With LEDs you wouldn’t recommend blurple today, however going full spectrum gives options like using bar lights for a more consistent spread and such. An example being I wouldn’t go back to an LED light without a dimmer switch, as they really come in handy for controlling the light intensity at the top of an even canopy (as too much light in a home grow, without cO2, can harm the final product).

For optimal growth, it’s essential to try and maintain the right VPD, and for a lot of people it’s cumbersome to do this manually depending on where you are (environment wise), and so some systems aim to automatically assist in this by monitoring the temperature and humidity and adjusting the extractor fan accordingly.

It depends on your style for sure, but it can easily get justifiably expensive depending on how you’re growing. And that’s not even getting into hydroponics (which may require a chiller depending on where you are).

I am like on the very edge of buying stuff to try to learn to shoot and develop film. I’m not a good photographer, it is going to be so expensive, but for some reason it’s a skill I keep wanting to learn for like years

Well Jake the dog always said:

But with some hobbies, the thing you get good at is being poor.

Isn’t B&W pretty cheap to get into? You should watch the Technology Connections series on film developing.

Having a buddy with the same hobby can be great! Share equipment!

I’ve always done gaming but nobody does LAN parties around here and I have no friends.

Low-recurring cost hobbies are neat even if you need several hundred or thousand bucks worth of gear to get into them—mountain biking (or maybe cross-country skiing?)!

Stay out of my goon cave y’all

: looks at stack of four synthesizers:

I swear there were only two last week…

Hello there, I like 3D printers. And computer. And gaming.

Why is my money always gone.

Honestly computer and gaming are pretty cheap as far as hobbies go. The best possible consumer-grade PC you can get is a few thousand dollars at most

Now 3D printing sounds more expensive, but I don’t have nearly as much knowledge there :3

Initial set up cost is likely slightly cheaper for 3d printing. But unlike gaming, you can’t pirate the consumables.

pretty cheap

mentions a few thousand dollars

Okay. 🫠

For what is essentially top-of-the-line gear? Yes. That is cheap. Remember, I am talking about the upper limit here. As in, there’s no more money you can reasonably spend than that, as you won’t get any further benefit. Top-of-the-line GPU, CPU, 64GB of RAM, the best OLED you can get, extra budged for cheaper elements such as additional side monitors, etc. in practice you can get by with much less

I mean, just look at the prices of any other hobby. Hobbies aren’t cheap! A “fun” car and its mantainance isn’t cheap. And what about a really good bike? Or a good instrument and music lessions? A small fishing boat, with fishing gear, and a way to transport and store it all, won’t cost little either. We could even talk about practical hobbies such as woodworking, working with metal, leather working, but those definitively can be very expensive, especially in material costs. And especially if you include the space they require as part of the price.

You need to keep in mind maintenance costs, or the money it takes to partake in hobbies over time, as well. For video games this is low compared to other hobbies. Even I, who considers video games to be my main hobby, rarely spend more than a few tens of dollars a month on new games on average, and I feel like I play new stuff constantly. A lot of the games I like to play are simply not AAA prices, I play replayable/long-playable games I already own a good amount, and I simply don’t have enough time to play through games quickly enough to spend more

Of course, you can do a lot of hobbies cheaply, but not if you go for high-end stuff. You can do video games cheaply as well. You probably need a computer for work anyway, so spend like 200$ extra, and you got something that can play a lot of interesting games.

why stop at consumer grade hardware? PCIe switches exist for a reason (so I can put more expansion cards in my computer)

Motorcycles. Just got into motorcycles after a decade of scooters… Oh god, the safety gear, the consumables, the accessories… It never ends.

If only the intense interest even lasted over 2 years.

(Tea, historical flutes, opera, treasure hunting/metal detecting, BJDs, woodwind maintenance & repair, Meshtastic/Meshcore/Reticulum radio, 3D printing/modeling/CNC)

Cycling, sailing, kayaking, archery, backpacking, climbing - lots of gear needed! Sigh

High end PCVR my beloved.

This, also 4K 120Hz gaming with ray tracing.
Also DJ gear,
Also home theater & OLED TVs,
Also modified sports cars,
*and* I’m an audiophile.

I can’t afford any of this shit, but it’s what I like.

Aquariums ! A perfect money and time sink. With the added advantage of hard to discard/sell elements that nobody wants after that. A real treat !

I just started film photography. It costs about $1 per photo, more for better film, and I’m on track to shoot a roll every 3 days.

Do you develop your own film? If youre just starting out you could probably get an old entry level dslr and a stock lense pretty cheap to teach yourself what all the settings do on a film camera

I picked up a Nikon FM2 with 50mm lens recently. I thought about shooting black and white, but I love color too much. I’m currently shooting Cinestill 800t. Next up is Kodak Gold 200, then maybe I’ll try Porta 400. Kinda just exploring film stocks to see what I like. Seems most of the cost comes from developing, so I’m not too stressed about the higher end film. I might still try black and white, but mostly to learn how developing the film + scanning works. If all goes well, I might get into medium format in a few years.

I’m very fortunate to have a good job. These types of purchases feel like I’m investing in learning the art of film. But I’ll keep shooting digital too to balance the budget.

Edit: I haven’t looked up with film stocks cost more to develop, so I may regret the more expansive film

Enjoy yourself! I’ve never wanted to spend the coin to develop film, but I do have a cheap 35mm point and shoot, it’s nice but I’d still rather be able to shoot 2500 photos in an afternoon haha

That’s the other thing is going through 2500 photos stresses me out lol. I’m excited to embrace the creative constraint. Btw, I’d love to see a photo you’ve taken if you’re willing to share!

Maybe a local university will let you use their dark room on the cheap? :D

That’s not a bad idea. I’m guessing they are more equipped to develop color film. Honestly I’d been be open to taking a college class on film if that class exists near me. I think education is worth investing in.

For me that would be yoyos, kendamas, Lego, 3D printing, and comic books. I feel seen.

Wish it was that easy…. the heart wants what it wants. Just can’t “get into things” like that. I have to like it.

Ugh this and it’s exhausting!

My mind: let’s use Linux to cut down telemetry and get some control over the distractions on my pc. (That’s a couple of weeks research rabbit hole, which could have been just one DL and install)

Now let’s do the phone (still going on)

Let’s host an rpg (jup, all the effort)

Let’s write an album…

For once I’d like my mind to go “hey I love going for a walk or doing yoga”.

I think I might get too into leatherworking or metalwork.
